Lately, I’ve written a lot about fitness and healthy living, but as I mentioned in previous articles, it’s hard for me to stick to my own healthy living plan. Finally, there’s a fitness event I can really appreciate – Culinaria’s fourth annual Wine and Beer 5k to be held at The Shops at La Cantera on March 22. It’s a lot easier to run when you are running toward a nice glass of Sauvignon Blanc.

The race isn’t all about the drinks though.  Fitness trainers from Gold’s Gym, Culinaria’s fitness sponsor, will start bright and early at 7 a.m. by leading beer and wine lovers in pre-race yoga and warm-up exercises.  The run itself will be held on the roads and paths around The Shops at La Cantera and is expected to draw thousands of participants.

As two core components of a healthy lifestyle, exercise and eating go hand in hand. Culinaria’s mission is to support the local culinary community and promote San Antonio as a premier wine and food destination, but the organization is committed to the concept of healthy living and the importance of balancing the enjoyment of food and drink with fitness.   This event truly embraces that balance, and so at the finish line, runners will be treated to bites from local food purveyors and restaurants, as well as live entertainment – and of course, wine and beer.

The Wine & Beer 5k is the first of many of events planned for 2014 and aims to bring awareness and funding for the remaining Culinaria events and the Culinaria Educational Center and Gardens.  Currently in the planning stage, the Center & Gardens will continue the organization’s mission through creating the perfect space to host chef demonstrations, dinners and nutritional seminars, as well as enrich our city’s already vibrant culinary community.

Next up, between May 14-18, is Culinaria’s Festival Week, which is all about bringing people together and enjoying the tastes of San Antonio’s unique dining scene. From fancy formal wine dinners to a parking lot food truck gathering, the Festival has a little something for everyone.  In the coming days, we’ll highlight some of the festival events and the people behind them to see just what makes San Antonio’s flavors so special.

Race registration and tickets to Culinaria’s Festival Week events sell out quickly, so be sure to get in early.  You’ll see me for sure at the 5k.  I’ll be there in my quest to balance fitness with food and drink.  Emphasis on the food and drink.

We have two tickets to give away for the H-E-B Alon Market Food Truck event at 6 p.m. on May 15. In the comments below, tell us which food truck featured at the event is your favorite and we’ll put your name in the drawing. Trucks include:

  1. I’ve visited a lot of those listed (so they need to keep showing up at Sagimbeni Fine Wine on Saturdays), but Slider Provider hits the right spot every time. I still crave that pulled pork slider. Man, is it good.
