The 31st annual Jazz’SAlive, hosted by the City of San Antonio and the San Antonio Parks Foundation, continues through Sunday this weekend in Travis Park. The only things you’ll need to bring are lawn chairs, blankets, water, and maybe some snacks as everything you need for the free, two-day concert series is in close proximity to the park. The festival is composed of two large stages, food trucks, concession stands, and plenty of activities for children. Many attendees arrive early to claim a spot for optimal viewing and listening experiences.
The day starts with all performances on the Valero/KRTU stage bordering the east side of the park. Fans flip sides to the west side of the park for the late-night Bud Light International Main Stage performances featuring nationally recognized artists such as Marlena Shaw (pictured above).
It’s the first festival since Travis Park’s renovation was completed earlier this year. The soft green lawn welcomed those who preferred to nap between performances.
More than 30 food and beverage stands surround the north and south sides of the park. I spoke with Ann Braly, owner of the well-known Popcorn Wagon that was formerly at Hemisfair Park but is now a permanent fixture at Travis Park.
“We love being here, all of our customers have been really welcoming,” she said of the new location.
Just as the sun was setting, the River Rats Brass Band decked out in Spurs gear flooded the walkways, inspiring dance and a crowding mass of spectators. The band’s performance turned the crowd on its head as the music came parading down, playing the New Orleans tune made famous by Louie Armstrong, “When the Saints Go Marching In.” Beads were tossed by some band members while their brass glinted warmly in the sun’s last light.
Just like Travis Park, Jazz’SAlive is only getting better with age. From the added amenities for children to the added staff tending the park grounds, it’s a partnership worth celebrating.
