A series of both classic and more contemporary Broadway shows will take the stage at the Majestic Theatre this fall for its 2016-2017 season. Starting in September, North Park Lexus Broadway at the Majestic Theatre will feature productions ranging from re-imagined musicals to record-shattering magic shows.
First on the lineup is Rodger and Hammerstein’s The Sound of Music, which hits the stage Sept. 13-18. Directed by the Tony Award-winning Jack O’Brien, the production features some of the most famous numbers in musical history, such as “Do-Re-Mi,” “My Favorite Things” and “Edelweiss.”
This new production aired live on NBC in December 2013 to more than 44 million viewers, the first musical production televised live in more than half a century. The classic film adaptation starring Julie Andrews and Christopher Plummer celebrated its 50th anniversary last year.
October ushers in Sam Mendes’ and Robert Marshall’s Cabaret, presented by Roundabout Theatre Company. Set in a pre-World War II Germany, the play portrays the vibrant nightlife of the Kit Kat Club with memorable tunes including “Willkommen,” “Maybe This Time,” and the musical’s title song “Cabaret.” This classic story of forgetting the drama and dangers of the real world, if only for an evening, will show at the Majestic Oct. 25-30.
Jersey Boys, a show that shattered Majestic Theatre Box Office records in September 2010, will be back in town in December. Des McAnuff directs this true-story production about the formation and eventual success of Frankie Valli and The Four Seasons. The quintessential rags-to-riches story includes real-life radio hits like “Sherry,” “Oh What A Night,” and “Can’t Take My Eyes Off You” and will show Dec. 6-11.
The Broadway best-seller The Illusionists is next on the Majestic’s lineup for this season. The unique show exposes audiences across the globe to riveting stunts and seemingly unreal acts laced with magic and illusion, and will hit the stage Jan. 10-15, 2017.
In March, the theatre will welcome Jonathan Larson’s Rent, the Pulitzer Prize- and Tony Award-winning rock musical that forever altered America’s theatre scene. Based in New York City, the musical celebrates seven aspiring artists who exhibit resilience and creativity in the face of overwhelming trials during the height of the HIV/AIDS epidemic. Rent, which brings multi-generational audiences hit songs such as “Seasons of Love,” is celebrating its 20th anniversary this year and will come to San Antonio March 3-5, 2017.
Beautiful – The Carole King Musical will be up next on March 14-19, 2017. The production walks the audience through the rise of King’s exceptional music career, and the plot, which features stories of King’s close friends and musical collaborators, is woven together by her classic hits such as “Natural Woman” and “Will You Love Me Tomorrow,” her first No. 1 hit.
Broadway’s newest sensation, Finding Neverland, features author J.M. Barrie’s iconic Peter Pan and his many adventures. The heartwarming tale of Peter Pan’s backstory is suitable for audiences of all ages, and will take the Majestic’s stage May 2-7, 2017.
Matilda The Musical, Time Magazine’s No. 1 show of the year, will fittingly close San Antonio’s upcoming Broadway performance season. This story of an astonishing and imaginative girl who strives to change her fate is based on the esteemed novel by Roald Dahl and has racked up an impressive 50 international awards. Musical numbers such as “When I Grow Up” and “Naughty” will resonate across the Majestic Theatre for Matilda June 6-11.
