A shoebox. Everybody has at least one lying around their house – stuffed in a dresser, looming over the highest shelf in your closet, or in my case, used to organize the collection of childhood memories my mother keeps adding to. The Stephen F. Austin Academy officially stepped up the functionality of the containers with its Shoebox Fiesta Parade on Thursday.

Instead of using the small spaces for knickknack storage, the boxes were transformed by young students’ creative energies. Popular themes were San Antonio Spurs and Frozen, but each had a unique take. One float was remote-controlled with a working television screen that looped Spurs replays – this student may have had a little help from his parents.

We entered Rose Calderon’s first-grade classroom as the students prepared to walk their floats down the hallways and into the gymnasium of the SAISD academy. The students were dressed in bright, beautiful colors and full of smiles and pride. Other students lined the hallways with homemade noise makers which were used in unison – the most school spirit I’ve ever witnessed at this grade level. Our own director Robert Rivard performed the duties of parade grand marshal, handing out candy and throwing beaded necklaces to the children. Each student entered the school gymnasium to a cheering audience of their families, the band Mariachi Los Tigres, and recognition from Principal Noemi Davila.

  1. A little help?

Anyone who saw that parade knows helicopter parents did all the work on 90% of those things.

Kudos though on the positive SAISD reporting which is a rarity around town.
