It’s hard not to feel a rush of creativity when you walk into San Antonio’s newest museum, The DoSeum – and it’s not even open yet.

Final touches on the future home of the San Antonio Children’s Museum are being hammered down, on track and on budget, for its grand opening Saturday, June 6. The $46 million, 65,000 sq. ft. project designed by Lake Flato takes up much of the 2800 block of Broadway Street across from Lions Field Park and features indoor and outdoor enjoyment for children of all ages.

“Some people ask me how did you get the name DoSeum? Well, Children learn by doing, so everything is hands on and touchy,” said Cristiana Noriega, DoSeum senior marketing manager, during a recent tour of the construction. “Everything is designed to provoke kids interest and get them to figure things out. Learning through doing.”

Here are some exciting things about The DoSeum:

  • STEAM subjects (science, technology, engineering, art, and, mathematics) will be key components in every learning activity.
  • The museum will feature a musical staircase that adapts to different sounds depending on how many children are on it.
  • A programmable, one-of-a-kind robot named Baxter will live here.
  • Enrollment for summer camps has already begun and programing begins June 8. There will be 44 camps that are up to 11 weeks long.
  • Reclaimed water collected onsite will be used to irrigate the property, one of many low-impact development principles implemented.
  • A giant outside play area, “The Big Climb,” will be a great way for kids to enjoy the outdoors and remain safe while doing it.
  • A 26-foot tall treehouse will be accessible to all children including an 18-foot tall section that is wheelchair accessible.
  • The DoSeum will have 243 onsite parking spaces (a relief for many that frequent the current downtown museum which has none).

  1. I hope there will be an opening for those of us who are “young at heart” but do not posses a child of the proper age as an escort.
