Hot Wells has always been a mystery to me. From time to time I would see a friend post a photo or two of the ruins of the former hotel and spa which looked like it belonged somewhere in western Europe instead of south San Antonio.

I’ve never been there, so I was elated when I had the opportunity to see the historical site for myself at this year’s Harvest Feast, a benefit dinner for the Hot Wells Conservancy. It was hard not to imagine 1900s hotel guests wandering through the once-refined passage ways.

Beer from Alamo Beer and Freetail Brewing companies and craft cocktails from The Esquire Tavern and The Brooklynite were in high demand throughout the evening.

Watching chefs graze the grounds, picking up ingredients for their signature dishes, was a nice touch. Tastes from 25 different chefs including Robbie Nowlin from Citrus, Jason Dady, and Tim the Girl just to name a few.  I was able to tour the grounds and get a look at the top floor overlooking the overgrown landscape that thrived after the recent rain.  I will definitely be back to Hot Wells. 1. Funny. At Barnsley House the Head Gardener Richard Gatenby told us the chefs at the spa pick lettuces like a predator would, whereas we gardeners pick them like delicate flowers. A few here. A few there. Always leaving the plant in beautiful condition. Would be fun to see what style harvesters our chefs are!!
