The Crowning of El Rey Feo LXVI

In the highest form of tradition, another year means another crowing of “The Ugly King,” “The People’s King,” El Rey Feo. Crowds gathered at the historic Arneson River Theater to witness the grand occasion. El Rey Feo has been a San Antonio tradition since 1947 and an integral part of Fiesta since 1980. It’s hard not to notice the motorcade and accompanying court that fastens itself to the honor of being Rey Feo, but in reality it is so much more than just Fiesta appearances, sparkling jewelry, and thousands of photo-ops.

Jimmy Green, El Rey Feo LXVI, has been crowned due to his persistent charitable contributions to San Antonio’s education – an undeniable asset to this community and one that will continue to give back for generations to come. The new Rey Feo arrived by riverboat with tears in his eyes and a bouquet of fresh flowers for his wife. El Rey Feo LXVI’s acceptance speech focused on the need of quality education for all children.

“It is my goal to someday walk the streets of San Antonio and know every child will graduate high school,” he said. Fiesta will come to an end next week, but El Rey Feo’s charitable duties have just begun.

The Investiture of King Antonio XCII

To continue with honorable announcements for Fiesta 2014 comes a new Texas Cavalier King Antonio the XCII. Hosted at Alamo Plaza this historic event honored the fallen heroes that fought in The Battle of The Alamo.  With each new King Antonio, a local celebrity is born, visiting community schools, nursing homes, and hospitals on a regular basis.

Donald Miller Jr. accepted this honor at sunset Saturday and the Texas Cavalier blue-plumed cap was rest on his head. Mayor Julián Castro gave a welcome speech and offered our new King Antonio the key to our growing city.  Crowds cheered as the colors of the six flags that had once flown over Texas were represented one by one. The light blue and deep red uniforms of The Texas Cavaliers were brighter than ever for this memorable Fiesta investiture.
