Hundreds of families and individuals took the Mission Reach and Mission County Park by storm Saturday for River Relay & Get Outdoors.

The event, which featured a competitive kayak and running relay along the San Antonio River, was hosted by the San Antonio River Foundation and San Antonio River Authority. The fun and spectator friendly race’s goal is to encourage San Antonians of all ages to increase their physical activity, take advantage of the hike and bike trails along the Mission Reach, and see the San Antonio from a different perspective – from on the water.

Participants entered the races individually or in a team setting, as they sped down the river in kayaks for a 4K race or along the Mission Reach Trail in a 5K run. Once river relayers crossed the finish line, they gathered at Mission County Park, where the Get Outdoors portion of the event was held.

The cool, cloudy weather Saturday morning was ideal for the occasion and many stayed after the relays for free health screenings and a variety of free activities put on by more than 30 outdoor recreation and education exhibitors. Alamo Beer flowed and live music provided by country band Two Tons of Steel accompanied the celebrations that continued into the early afternoon.
