The next edition of Something Monday will take us to The Witte Museum to get a first hand look at the new state-of-the-art H-E-B Body Adventure exhibit. The exhibit offers a wide variety of interactive games that aim to increase health I.Q. and awareness. We’ll start our casual, social bike ride at 6:30 p.m. at the San Antonio B-Cycle station located in the D.R. Semmes Family YMCA parking lot 3233 N. St Mary’s St. From there, we will take a nice ride through Brackenridge Park and on to The Witte. Afterwards, please join us for food, drink, and good company at Tycoon Flats.

Bryan Bayles, curator of Health and Anthropology at The Witte, will guide us through the exhibit, including the popular relaxation/meditation games, which highlight the power of the mind and the importance of mental concentration and mindful self-awareness to overall wellness.

The “Relax to Win” game, for example, has two visitors sit at either end of a table and engage in “competitive relaxation.” The ability to control brain waves (relax) allows them to score a goal against their opponent. Each player wears a headband with electrodes that measure alpha and theta waves, the types produced by a calm, relaxed state of the brain. The more a visitor relaxes, the more a ball on top of the table (powered by a magnet under the table) moves toward the opponent’s goal on the opposite side.

The game is not only fun, but also empowering as visitors are able to see a direct effect of their mind’s relaxation on the ball. Each players brain waves are displayed on a large screen in real time above the table so onlookers can watch (and heckle, if need be). See a video of Bryan playing the game with a colleague below.
