The WEBB Party bode Fiesta farewell Friday night, hosting its “Ultima Fiesta” at the Lambermont Estate. Because of its growing popularity, the party will be moved to Halloween next year to accommodate more people.
The crowd did its part to make it an ultimate party to remember – drinking, dancing, eating gourmet food, and altogether relishing in the party’s offerings. It was, as always, simply fabulous.
And, as the Fiesta saying goes, it wasn’t just a party, it was a “party with a purpose.” The WEBB Party started as a small gathering of friends in 1993 to benefit the San Antonio AIDS Foundation (SAAF). Since then, it has become one of the most popular Fiesta events. WEBB VIPs and corporate sponsors underwrite the planning costs so that profits go directly to the San Antonio AIDS Foundation and its client services.
Dillon Mckinnis, a San Antonio AIDS Foundation volunteer was roaming the party Friday night after conducting free HIV and Syphilis testing. He’s part of the Use Me Team, a SAAF program that provides free testing, mental health counseling, and tips for “coming out” to family and community members. Mckinnis said people with HIV/AIDS are undergoing not only a physical struggle, but a mental one. He said the negative connotation attached to the disease keeps people from talking about having the disease, which can cause mental health issues like depression.
“This is what I want to do for the rest of my life,” Mckinnis said. “Just help people out and let them know they’re not alone.”
The Lambermont Estate, modeled after the French-style chateaus and Belgium-inspired castles of Northern Europe, was built in 1894 as the residence of Edwin Holland Terrell. While in the building, adorned with high ceilings, crystal chandeliers, hand-carved woodwork, brick fireplaces and sprawling hardwood floors, one seemed to be taken to another time and place. The aged aesthetics of the estate contrasted the eccentric, colorful, and youthful crowd at the party.
