Would you like to see the Tobin Center for the Performing Arts before it opens on Sept. 4? The final opportunity to do so, a Downtown Tuesday Be-Cause event, is set for Aug. 19 at 5:30 p.m. Tickets are available for $40 online. Tours will still continue after the center's opening.
The behind-the-scenes tour of the Tobin Center will offer a glimpse at the new performing arts center complete with a river barge ride from the St. Mary's Street parking garage – which is offering free parking from 5 p.m. to 2 a.m., as per the Downtown Tuesday initiative. Guests will enjoy dinner service from Guillermo's, as well as performances from San Antonio Symphony musicians. Part of the proceeds will benefit United Way, Be-Cause's charitable partner.
Space is extremely limited for this event, said Downtown Tuesday spokesperson Tanya Sammis.
"We've sold 2/3 of the tickets already," she said. "They're getting grabbed up fast."
Downtown Tuesdays were inspired by District 1 City Councilman Diego Bernal, who said there was a lack of knowledge of things to do Downtown, and wanted San Antonio residents both inside and outside of the urban core to learn about its offerings beyond the crowded weekends. Be-Cause was introduced on Downtown Tuesday's second anniversary, a quarterly charitable event.
"We saw that all the great growth the city has been tied to in entertainment and performing arts opportunities," said Sammis. "We saw goodness happening there, and and wanted to make sure residents of San Antonio were part of it as well ... (The Tobin Center brings) more opportunity, more art, more musicians.
"What we want is to see more traffic, more residents of San Antonio downtown on a regular basis, being able to learn what there is to offer," Sammis said, adding that the River Walk, which has a walkway directly to the Tobin Center, is "much more than a tourist attraction."
