Fans who purchased tickets to the San Antonio Commanders’ cancelled final home game will be able to get refunds, but some might have to wait awhile.
The Commanders’ season and the existence of the franchise came to an abrupt end Tuesday when the Alliance of American Football announced it was ceasing operations. Majority owner Tom Dundon made the decision after reportedly losing $70 million on the league after rescuing the eight-team startup from financial problems in February less than a month into its first season.
The Commanders had one home game remaining on its schedule: Saturday’s game at the Alamodome against the Memphis Express. Alamo Distilling Company invited fans to a farewell tailgate from 10 a.m.-2 p.m. Saturday at its location at 621 Chestnut Street. The company said players and team staff had been invited.
On Thursday, crews were removing Commanders and AAF signage from around the Alamodome after the sudden demise of the league Tuesday in the midst of what would be the final Commanders practice.
To obtain refunds, fans who purchased tickets for Saturday’s game at the Alamodome box office must return to the Alamodome with the same credit card used to make the purchase — if one was used — and they will receive an immediate refund. The box office is open Monday-Friday 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. It will be open Saturday from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m., according to a statement on the Alamodome website.
Fans who purchased tickets through Ticketmaster might have already received refunds in credit back to the original form of payment. If a refund hasn’t been credited back to those fans, the Alamodome’s statement said they are being processed.
The fans who will have to wait the longest for refunds are those who were most supportive: season-ticket holders. Season-ticket holders generally purchase tickets through the team, and according to Alamodome’s statement, details for how those fans can get refunds are still being worked out.
“As soon as information is available, the Alamodome will advertise the refund process for game tickets and/or parking purchased through the Commanders website or Commanders phone room,” the statement said.
The Commanders were the league’s most successful franchise in terms of attendance, averaging more than 27,000 fans per game.
