CPS Energy officials have extended the deadline for applicants to represent the southwest quadrant of the utility’s service area on its board of trustees.

The utility announced it has extended its deadline to 5 p.m. on Oct. 12, nearly one month after its initial deadline of Sept. 14. Applications are due by mail or email, with application materials available on CPS Energy’s website.

So far, 14 people have applied, utility officials said.

“What we really want here is a strong applicant pool,” CPS Energy Chair John Steen said.

Earlier this year, some City Council members criticized the utility for the all-male makeup of its board and what some saw as a lack of advertising for its most recent board opening.

CPS Energy’s board of trustees oversees the country’s largest municipally owned utility with a $2.6 billion budget. The utility serves roughly 821,000 electrical customers and 340,000 gas customers in the San Antonio area.

The new board member will replace Homer Guevara Jr., a professor of economics and government at Northwest Vista College, whose term expires on Jan. 31, 2019. Guevara has served on the board since 2009.

Applicants must live in the southwest quadrant of the utility’s service area, roughly south of Culebra and Grissom roads and west of Interstate 35 South from downtown San Antonio to State Highway 16 and west of U.S. Highway 281. This includes City Council districts 4, 5, and 6, and some parts of districts 1, 3, and 7.

The utility’s five-member board will interview the pool of applicants and nominate Guevara’s replacement. The nominee must then be confirmed by City Council vote.

CPS Energy will host an open house and information session for prospective applicants from 5 to 7 p.m. on Wednesday, Oct. 3 at its main office at 145 Navarro St.
