Councilmember Mike Gallagher (D10) announced his support of Mayor Ivy Taylor in the June 13 runoff election Friday afternoon by sending out an email notification to District 10 constituents and local media.

Gallagher, a retired Air Force Colonel, represents the far northeast corner of San Antonio where the per capita income is typically among the top three in San Antonio behind Districts 8 and 10. According to the numbers crunched by Out in SA, a majority of District 10 voted for Taylor during the May 9 election that resulted in a runoff between her and former Sen. Leticia Van de Putte.

This announcement comes just days after Councilmember Alan Warrick (D2) and other Eastside elected officials and leaders threw their support behind Van de Putte. Taylor lives in District 2 and was its council member for five years before becoming interim mayor in 2014.

Gallagher's Statement:

"I have worked with Mayor Taylor on numerous issues, programs and projects that have had positive and profound effects on our District and the city. Her support has been essential in continuing our Northeast Corridor (Perrin Beitel/Nacogdoches) revitalization efforts. She also helped me in establishing a Tax Increment Reinvestment Zone for this corridor.

"Likewise, she took the lead on giving our citizens the right to vote on any future lightrail or streetcar project. In the area of public safety, she was behind the passage of my efforts for a hands-free (no cell phone) driving ordinance. In addition, Ivy is helping our community establish safe exchange zones on SAPD property for those involved in e-commerce transactions. The most pressing issue in the city today is resolving the Police and Fire Unions labor negotiations. She has made significant strides with both sides while at the same time protecting our city's current and future financial condition.

"Mayor Taylor has demonstrated great leadership by focusing on our 2012/17 Bond projects such as the magnificent Northeast Senior Center, currently under construction. Ivy also ensured that funding be set aside for the northern connectors on US281/1604 in order to reduce the need for tolls. The Harry Wurzbach/Austin Highway connectors project is another prime example of her support for Fort Sam Houston and investing in our city’s infrastructure.

"The most important statement I can make is that Mayor Ivy Taylor has supported me on the major issues that impact our District. She continues to bring experienced, responsible, non-partisan, and well-informed leadership to the Mayor's office."
