Established in 2003, the Friends of the SA Parks Foundation is a citizens’ organization dedicated to advocating for the expansion, enhancement and protection of parks in the Alamo City, under the guidance of the Parks Foundation.
Hundreds of individuals and families attended the free daytime festival, with furry friends and kites in tow. While ominous skies threatened rain in the morning, the weather held and didn’t stop pups and humans of all sizes from enjoying the event, complete with live music, food and lots and lots of canine clothing.
A “pooch parade” kicked off at noon, with several well-dressed dogs and their owners competing for the titles of best dressed and best owner/pet lookalike.
A handsome red pit bull mix named Red Bull and his owner took home third place, representing some St. Paddy’s-meets-Fiesta spirit in decorated green T-shirts. Second place for the lookalike contest went to tiny Riggins and his human counterpart, both in Texans jerseys, but Cooper, a hunting dog with all the accouterments of a human hunter strapped on his back, took home the prize.
Best dressed went to Peanut the Pekinese, festooned in full St. Patrick’s day regalia, with Daisy, riding like a queen in a carriage, and “Thing 1 and Thing 2” taking home second and third, respectively.
Take a look at a few scenes from the day in the gallery above and keep an eye out for next year’s festival.
