Former SkyTV CEO Is Rackspace’s New Chief Marketing Officer

Mark Bunting is Rackspace's new chief marketing officer.

Rackspace Hosting announced another new addition to its leadership roster Thursday, naming Mark Bunting the cloud management company's new chief marketing officer.

The former CEO of airline television network SkyTV will be responsible for global marketing strategy and all aspects of Rackspace's marketing organization, including communications, brand, advertising, creative, digital, field, and channel marketing. He will be based in San Antonio and Austin.

Bunting joins the executive leadership team led by CEO Joe Eazor, who took the reins at Rackspace a year ago. In that time, the company has appointed David Meredith as chief operations officer and Louis Alterman as chief financial officer, both in June 2017, and Joel Friedman as new chief technology officer last fall.

Bunting replaces Carla Pineyro-Sublett, a former Dell marketing executive who started with Rackspace in May 2015 and departed in October 2017.

“I’ve known and worked with Mark for years and am excited to have him formally on board,” stated Eazor in a press release. “His appointment to CMO, in combination with the recent additions to the Rackspace executive team, serves as a signal to the market that we’re ready to drive Rackspace forward as a digital transformation leader.”

Rackspace was acquired by New York-based private equity firm Apollo Global Management in 2016, and since then, the company has expanded its capabilities with major acquisitions, including Datapipe, TriCore Solutions, and most recently, RelationEdge. The company also has undertaken several rounds of layoffs that have affected its San Antonio workforce.

Last year, Apollo Global Management also acquired Apollo Education Group, where Bunting has held acting executive positions.

A serial entrepreneur and former Rackspace customer, Bunting has founded numerous digital and media brands, including SkyTV, which was sold to Ziff-Davis in 1998. He has held various leadership roles in his 25-year tech marketing career, including interim chief marketing officer for cybersecurity company McAfee. He currently serves as a mentor to numerous technology start-ups at the Austin-based accelerator Capital Factory.

"For more than two decades, I had the privilege of talking about technology on TV via appearances on The Discovery Channel, CNBC, The Learning Channel, Fox and my own series, Bunting’s Window," Bunting wrote on the Rackspace blog. "These experiences gave me a ringside seat to some of the biggest companies and most talented people in the field.

"Yet the opportunity I see at Rackspace is something I have rarely seen in those 20 years — and it’s what has made me so excited to join the Rackspace team."

Bunting is a graduate of the University of Texas at Austin, where he is currently a lecturer at the Stan Richards School of Advertising and Public Relations.
