St. Mary’s University alumnus Bill Greehey made his third annual gift of $1 million to his alma mater. The funds go to the Greehey Scholars Program, a unique undergraduate program that focuses on servant leadership.
The contribution to his eponymous scholars program is not the only example of Greehey donating to St. Mary’s. In 2012 he gave $1 million to help upgrade the school’s MBA offerings. His $25 million gift in 2005 resulted in the naming of the Greehey School of Business and thee funding of academic and scholarship programs.
“So many St. Mary’s students – past, present, and future – can point to Bill Greehey as a key to their academic success,” St. Mary’s President Thomas Mengler said. “We are truly blessed to have Mr. Greehey as our friend.”
The Greehey Scholars program, however, is a special legacy.
Greehey Scholars participate in the life of the university in particularly hands-on ways. They are involved with campus fundraising initiatives and retreats, business internships, and volunteer commitments with organizations such as Each One Teach One, San Antonio Youth Literacy, Society of St. Vincent de Paul, San Antonio Humane Society, and Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA).
During breaks, Greehey scholars participate in service-immersion trips.
“We are incredibly grateful for (Greehey’s) support and his continuing generosity, which enables us to live our mission of changing lives and building a better world grounded in faith, values, and service,” Dean of the Greehey School of Business Tanuja Singh said.
