Local architects will present new design renderings for Texas Public Radio‘s new headquarters at the historic Alameda Theater to the City’s Historic and Design Review Commission on Wednesday.
Two floors will be added to the 2012 backstage structure for TPR’s studio and administrative offices along with exterior modifications including windows, according to renderings submitted to the City by the architectural firm Overland Partners.
These conceptual renderings come about four months after preliminary drawings were released in April.
The City of San Antonio still owns the building but is working with Bexar County, Texas Public Radio, La Familia Cortez, and a host of community partners plan to turn the remodeled Alameda into a venue for cultural programming and new headquarters for the nonprofit radio station.
The project will physically open the street and building to San Pedro Creek, which celebrated the opening of its first phase in May.
Construction on the TPR office space, expected to cost between $23 million and $26 million, began this summer. TPR plans to raise $5 million for the project, and $5 million could be gleaned from state and federal historic renovation tax credits, City officials have said. The remaining $16 million could come from the City and County tax reinvestment zone on Houston Street. The Alameda Theater Conservancy was established to raise funds and manage the space.
Work on the theater is expected to start in early 2019.
Office of Historic Preservation staff is recommending conceptual approval of the project to HDRC. If approved next week, architects would still need to return to the commission for final approval.
