  1. Good article Bob. We’ve tried it the other way with horrible results. It’s time to look at the facts and to stop leaving our kids as sitting ducks. I find the following helpful: With just one single exception, the attack on congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords in Tucson in 2011, every public shooting since at least 1950 in the U.S. in which more than three people have been killed has taken place where citizens are not allowed to carry guns. Be well. Morgan

  2. Also, in case anyone raises the “Wild West” scare tactic, DA Reed just release the study that CCL holders do not account for any amount of crime. This is true across the nation.

  3. I would quit teaching if it came down to carrying guns in the classroom, and I know a lot of teachers who feel the same, including gun owners. I don’t know any teacher that wants that level of security responsibility; it’s not our job and it’s not what we’re trained for. And I don’t want that training. I signed up to be a teacher, not a soldier or police officer. But legislators in TX don’t listen to educators and this is hardly the first example of that. This is the same group of officials that think teachers are overpaid, lazy, taking too much vacation, too incompetent and thuggish to be trusted to unionize or collectively bargain, but now we’re supposed to be trusted with guns? No thanks. It’s a simplistic argument to a problem that’s bone-chillingly complex.

  4. I would have quit teaching as well. Have put out a FB request for my many former students who are FB friends asking “how many of you would have liked to be in my classroom if I had had a loaded gun?”

  5. I suspect that this situation will never be resolved to everyone’s satisfaction. We all have opinions, whether they be well thought out opinions, mere guesses, or personal experiences. When you really think about it, our schools, theaters, etc. are subject to attack at any given moment, but thankfully it doesn’t happen more frequently than it does because we are not a nation of suicide bombers. Yet.

I personally believe the solution is to take a close look at what is going on with our foreign neighbors and allies, some of whom are subject to attack every single day of their lives. When was the last time you heard of an Israeli school, theater, etc., coming under attack by some unstable personality. Suicide bombers? Of course. But take a close look at the measures they take to protect their beloved school children and then tell yourself that you disagree with it.

    Be safe!

  6. Wow! Really! This is the 21st Century and we’re in one of the most developed countries on Earth and this stuff is still happening. How much longer is it going to take before we really move forward?
