Morgan’s Wonderland, a theme park that caters to special-needs individuals but was built for everyone, will open a water park called Morgan’s Inspiration Island. A video featuring the park’s founder, retired developer and philanthropist Gordon Hartman, was posted Oct. 9 and advertises a Nov. 10 ground breaking event at the park.
According to an Express News story published Thursday, construction of the $9.9 million water park is set to begin in December and slated for completion in March 2017.
Hartman and his wife, Maggie, opened Morgan’s Wonderland in 2010 for their daughter with special needs, Morgan.
The water park news comes one day after City and County leaders announced plans to purchase Toyota Stadium, adjacent to Morgan’s Wonderland, from Hartman as part of a long-term play to attract a new Major League Soccer franchise to San Antonio. Hartman will receive a total of $21 million if the deal is approved by City Council and the Bexar County Commissioners Court next week. Each entity is paying $9 million while Spurs Sports & Entertainment is paying the remaining $3 million purchase price in return for a 20-year stadium lease.
