At 9 a.m. Saturday morning, a line of families snaked around the outside of Edison High School, the site of the District 1 Back-to-School Wellness Fair. Families showed up early to help prepare their young students for the upcoming school year. With the support of many community and corporate sponsors, volunteers passed out hundreds of free backpacks stuffed with fresh, new notebooks, rulers, pencils, glue and scissors.

The Novani Beauty School set up shop in a classroom and offered free haircuts to any children in need of a fresh trim. Classroom chairs stacked with text books became make-shift salon chairs as feet dangled above piles of recently-cut hair. Volunteers swept up hair, collected trash, taught about nutrition, and invited families to upcoming fitness events.

The San Antonio Food Bank offered breakfast and lunch to the children who attended. The morning was punctuated by raffle drawings for restaurant gift certificates, sports events, and T-shirts.

“Being prepared helps students get off to a great start for the school year,” commented Councilman Trevino. “We want to be sure District 1 students and their families have access to the resources they need for academic success.”
