Music festivals have taken over national music news, with Coachella, Ultra Music Festival, and Bonnaroo festival artist lineups being announced.

A local audience is really anticipating the announcement of the Maverick Music Festival lineup. Only a few names were released in the initial round on Thursday, including the Tune-Yards. The California duo’s 2014 experimental folk album Nikki Nack garnered outstanding reviews from critics and made many “Best Of” and “Year End” lists. Classic hip-hop group Cypress Hill has enjoyed rare longevity in the world of hip-hop, and two ’90s rock radio names – Cake and the Toadies – are headlining this year, as well.

The dates have moved from mid-March to April 10-11 – an interesting decision, considering that’s only a week before Fiesta San Antonio and the same weekend as the wildly popular Coachella music festival in California. The two festivals draw from a similar talent pool, reducing the number of relevant bands for festivals of this nature.

Maverick Fest 2014’s lineup had similar bands, including Twin Shadow, YACHT, and Run the Jewels. Attendance reached a total of about 10,000 during the two-day festival, including the free component. This year’s festival be held in downtown’s La Villita Historic Arts Village once again.

Other music events this year include Local Music Week (LMW), which takes place the week of May 18.  Similar to Austin’s Free Week, KMW hosts related events for seven nights all around San Antonio that are encouraged to be cheap or free and and consist of all local talent.

“LMW is constantly evolving, and we hope to forge new partnerships and continue to build momentum. We’ll be planning and finalizing details for the kick-off and mixer here in the next couple months,” said Libby Day of SATX Music, which assists Local 782‘s organization of LMW, and books shows for venues including the MixBottom Bracket Social Club and Dorcól Distilling Co.

Wreck The Decks,” an annual DJ event similar to Local Music Week, kicks off the week of July 11 and runs through July 18. Like its live music counterpart, Wreck The Decks consists of local artists, but they fall into the DJ and dance music performer categories.

Rivercity Rockfest will again be held at the AT&T Center May 24, and while Spurs Sports and Entertainment would not return phone calls regarding the lineup, it is rumored that Anthrax and Danish band Volbeat will be headlining.

Vans Warped Tour is also back at the AT&T Center June 28 with bands including Falling In Reverse and blessthefall.
