Parents interested in enrolling their students in San Antonio ISD’s Advanced and Creative Learning Academy next school year have until May 31 to submit applications.

They may, however, want to move fast. Kindergarten classrooms are already full, and other elementary classes are nearing capacity. There are still spots left in 7-10th grade.

For the 2016-17 school year, the new academy will have grades K-10, expanding to Pre-K-12 over the next two school years.

Applications are available online at www.saisd.net/advancedacademy. Parents may also pick up an application at SAISD’s Office of Academics, located at 406 Barrera St., Suite #5, and should call 210-554-2524 in advance.

In keeping with the mission of the new school, students will not be required to meet score requirements on an IQ test or be identified as “gifted and talented (G/T).” Students and families only need to be committed to rigorous learning and creative challenges.

Students will also benefit from teacher interns from Trinity University working alongside the master teachers in their classrooms. The campus will serve as a laboratory school for Trinity students completing the Masters in Teaching program. Through a partnership with City Education Partners, a group of philanthropists interested in expanding quality curriculum and teaching in San Antonio, the interns will be trained in gifted and talented instruction, and commit to three years in other SAISD schools developing G/T programs.

The new academy and subsequent flow of services into the district is part of SAISD Superintendent Pedro Martinez’s aspirations to raise the bar on academic performance in the district, and serve the population of students who will be able to advance and expand their learning once adequate services are in place.

The academy will be located across two nearby campuses, with the majority of grades housed at the Fox Tech High School campus on North Main Avenue and lower grades housed at West Euclid Avenue, which is currently the site of Austin Academy. Fox Tech magnet programs will remain at that campus, while Austin Academy closes at the end of this year, as previously announced.
