One year after the Women’s March in Washington D.C. that protested the inauguration of President Donald Trump, groups in cities around the world are hosting marches and rallies to mark the anniversary throughout the weekend.
In San Antonio, Main Plaza was filled with hundreds of women, men, children, and pets while speakers from various organizations voiced their concerns and hopes for the country. Loud cheers of encouragement in English and Spanish could be heard from blocks away.
San Antonio Women’s Rally on Saturday was put together by at least eight different organizations, including Planned Parenthood, Texas Organizing Project, Bexar County Democratic Women, P.E.A.C.E. Initiative, TX 23rd District Indivisibles, Domesticas Unidas, and the local chapter of the National Organization for Women.
Most second-annual events in the U.S. were focused on voter registration and voter rights.
Sisters Becky McMillan, Joyce Champion, and Torchie Champion drove four hours from McAllen to show their support. They attended a similar event in Brownsville last year but decided to make the trip to San Antonio this time.
Sarah Ochoa came to the rally with her children. “I am here to show my son and daughter what it means to support women, and all people, as we work for a better world. I thought it was important to show them [the rally] so they know how different people express their views,” she said.
“All Women, and those who support them, are invited to come out and celebrate Diversity, and help build Transformative Social Change in our Community,” stated the groups’ Facebook event page.
